By Jonathan Bray I've just come back from the launch of the second Google Android phone to be released, and I must say I'm impressed. Its sleek profile and solid build quality are a world away from the dumpy and disappointing T-Mobile G1, which we reviewed at the back end of last year.
The second handset running Google’s Android mobile operating system, the HTC Magic, launches this week on Vodafone’s networks in the UK, Spain and Germany. It will also be available from TIM in Italy and SFR in France. The Magic is a much improved Android device and provides a better demonstration of the platform’s potential, delivering a smooth user experience and excellent web-oriented functionality. However, operators and device vendors will need to think hard about how to differentiate their Android offerings as the platform is deployed more widely.
The new curvy design language doesn't feel like a strict departure from the G1, despite the many differences, instead the phone seems like a continuation of the "friendly" design nature of HTC's Android phones. We like it plenty, with a shiny look that doesn't make the phone look or feel too "plastic."
Often referred to on the Internet as the G2, HTC has teamed up with Vodafone in the UK to announce the HTC Magic, an Android-based handset that ditches the slide-out QWERTY keyboard. But has this move worked? Is this the must-have handset to look forward to? Pocket-lint was at the global launch in Barcelona to have a First Look.
The HTC Magic is HTC's second Android-powered handset after the T-Mobile G1 / HTC Dream. We first brought you a glimpse of this handset last month under its codename "HTC Sapphire" and assumed (incorrectly) that it would be heading for T-Mobile.
